The Second Day!
SUPER LONG DAY but full of fantastic stuff! Where to begin? We ate breakfast. Then we had a looooooonnngggg class. I say that, mostly because it was boring subject material (Czech economics and agriculture) but I also say that based on how soft the professors spoke.
After the class we ate lunch and then went on a 5 hour tour of the city where I saw some amazing, ridiculously old sights. Our tour guide was also our professor, Vlastimil Cersky, who of course knew a whole lot about what we were looking at. Some of the highlights include:
The Charles Bridge that was built on July 7, 1357. The first brick was laid 5:31AM. it was supposed to be started on at a magical time. I'll explain this date when I get back. But anyways it was King Charles that built it after it was destroyed by a war. Pretty incredible with a small outdoor market along it on the way across and statues as well. Some of them are of Jesus and some of various Saints.
The Prague Castle: this doesn't quite do it justice at all. It's absolutely incredible, built in the seventh century. The first picture is of the outside and the second is of the cathedral like inside. Stunning.
The next is of a church (I didn't get the name) but inside is a small baby doll of Jesus. The legend says that if you go to the church and pray to the baby Jesus will grant you fertility to give you a baby. Needless to say, I didn't pray haha. Of course insincerely hope this people don't really think a statue is the one granting them the blessing of a child. Ha. But most native Czechs and Many Catholics believe that legend.
The Astronomical Clock: the picture is slightly blurry, but every hour it opens and performs like a cuckoo clock. The amazing thing about it was that it was built in the eleventh century and during one of the wars the entire tower was bombed and destroyed except the side the clock was on. So evidently it was meant to stay. Also after the clock is finished ringing a man with a trumpet plays a song at the very tip top of the tower.
This was a bridge that has a legend that if you put a lock on it and throw away the key in the creek below, you will have eternal love forever with the one your with. Funny thing, we saw a combination lock or two on there ;)
And last but not least, the Lennon Wall! Dad probably will think some hippies just got high and started graffiti on a random wall ( you know there is a CERY SURPRISING amount of graffitti in this city) haha. But it's a huge tourist attraction. Of course it was started in the eighties as a mural but then they just started painting and anyone can bring spray paint and put on it!
We ended up going to a place called Tesca that was similar to Wal mart but way better! And then me and Kara and Corie and Westlee and some people from the other schools left with two other tour guides, and ended up going to a beautiful park above the city the best view in all of prague must be there! It was wonderful! We got to know the students some which was quite amusing, haha then we came back to campus around 10:30 it is currently 12:18 AM here. Which makes it only 5:18 PM at home. So weird! There were many more places we went and many more interesting things that happened today, including using a public bathroom over here for the first time. WEIRD!!!!! Hahahaha. But I am super tired so I'll post on here tomorrow! Love you guys and want to let you know everything is wonderful over here! :) tomorrow we are going to tour beer factories and possibly a farm. Should be fascinating (: here's a last picture. Jan, one of our professors, bought us all an ice cream. And it was splendid! Chocolate covered strawberries :)
Oh and here's a picture of our whole Tennessee tech group at a palace we visited that was right beside the American embassy.

You'll notice more graffiti in Europe in general. It doesn't mean anything about how safe the area is, it's just how they express themselves and protest.
ReplyDeleteHope you're having a blast!
